Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced Sunday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.
López Obrador, 67, said that he is receiving treatment for mild COVID-19 symptoms.
“As always, I am optimistic,” he said.
While undergoing treatment, Mexico’s interior minister will conduct López Obrador’s normal morning news briefings.
But the president noted that he will participate in a scheduled Monday call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Mexico’s government has said it wants to obtain 12 million doses of Russia’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine, aiming to administer over 7 million doses before April.
Over 149,000 people in Mexico have died of COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic.
