The trailer for the upcoming second season of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” has finally been released ahead of the planned May premiere date, and fans were quick to point out some similarities between what may unfold in the newest episodes to another musically themed series of the past.
As the trailer opened and revealed that this year, the East High Wildcats were going to compete against the North High Drama Club for a Mencken Award as they tried to stage “Beauty and the Beast,” fans noted that specific scenes, from the way characters reacted to what unfolded around them to lighting and scenery, was very reminiscent of the initial competition between the William McKinley New Directions and the Carmel Vocal Adrenaline Glee Clubs on Fox’s former hit series, “Glee.”
One fan noted comparisons between specific characters, with a new one portrayed by Olivia Rose Keegan in particular, seeming similar to Jonathon Groff’s Jesse St. James on the former show, as well as a scene where he and his group of performers stunned their competitors with a performance.
In addition, some noted similarities between the scene and one from the Disney Channel Movie “Camp Rock 2” as well.
The new season of the show, which begins streaming on Disney+ May 14, also introduces fans to a new character, portrayed by Derek Hough. He is set to portray the coach of North High’s drama club, Zack, who also happens to be the ex-boyfriend of Miss Jenn (Kate Reinders).
The series will of course also feature the returns of fan-favorite East High Characters—including Olivia Rodrigo as Nini, Joshua Bassett as Ricky, Matt Cornett as E.J., Sofia Wylie as Gina, Larry Saperstein as Big Red, Julia Lester as Ashlyn, Dara Reneé as Kourtney, Frankie A. Rodriguez as Carlos, Mark St. Cyr as Mr. Mazzara and Joe Serafini as Seb Matthew-Smith.
