The Mets are not playing as many games as they would like, but fans have to be happy with what they saw this week. After giving Jacob deGrom no runs on Saturday, they came out and swept the Phillies with a three-game, two-day special. The starting pitching has been fantastic. The bats have come up with timely hits. All that equals a 5-3 start, six games postponed and a trip to snowy Colorado with more games in danger of being postponed.

To talk about the first-place Mets, it’s time for a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me, featuring a hilarious interview with the great Hank Azaria, aka Jim Brockmire.

Amazin’ But True Podcast Opening Segment with Jake & Figgie:

  • POSTPONEMENTS: Mets have played just eight games in 15 days. Six postponements already and potential for one or two more in Denver this weekend. Will cold weather this weekend have impact on pitchers?
  • SWEEPING PHILLIES/GREAT PITCHING/NIMMO: Three-game sweep of Phillies was fun to watch. Starting pitching has been fantastic. David Peterson had a career day. Marcus Stroman and Taijuan Walker have been very good. The bullpen is pitching well. James McCann got his first Mets homer. Brandon Nimmo is tearing the cover off the ball. Top of the order 1-2-3 has been tremendous. Luis Rojas needs to be a better manager if the Mets want to be a major contender.
  • OPEN CITI FIELD’S GOOD FOOD: I rant about Steve Cohen needing to open up the good food options at Citi Field. Many fans enjoy the various things to eat and the only things they are getting right now are basic hot dogs, burgers and chicken fingers. Fans will start eating before coming to games if they don’t open the flood gates!

Hank Azaria Interview:
Actor, producer, comedian, star of “Brockmire,” “The Simpsons,” host of The Jim Brockmire Podcast

  • MANY ROLES/VOICE MIMICKING: Has had so many roles, one of first gigs was The Simpsons. Born with voice mimicking abilities. Compares it to vocal cords and being able to roll tongue. Can remember a voice he heard once 20 years later.
  • BROCKMIRE: The show is under “hidden comedy gems” on Hulu. Many people didn’t know about the show at first. Got the Jim Brockmire voice from baseball announcers sounding like that in the ’70s. Will we see him in the booth with Gary, Keith and Ron on SNY? Never know what Brockmire will say. When he was in ESPN booth, they were watching him closely. He does a few incredible Brockmire impressions of interviewing Mr. Met and how the 1986 Game 6 Mookie Wilson-Bill Bucker call would sound.
  • CURRENT METS/2007-08 COLLAPSES: Very optimistic with the Mets’ organizational changes. This team has a chance at a title. They have spent like big market team, but didn’t have the outcome. The 2007-08 collapses still stick with him today. Figgie takes us through what the feeling was in that final game in 2008 that closed out Shea Stadium.
