Matt Gaetz associate expected to plead guilty in federal case

Joel Greenberg, a former Florida official ensnared in the federal probe into Rep. Matt Gaetz, is expected to plead guilty to criminal charges next week — potentially spelling trouble for the embattled Republican congressman.

Greenberg, 37, will appear in federal court in Orlando, Florida on Monday, for a change of plea hearing, according to court documents.

The plea deal will resolve some of the charges against Greenberg, a former Seminole County tax collector who has been accused of sex trafficking of a child, aggravated identity theft and wire fraud.

Greenberg had been working for weeks toward a deal with federal prosecutors.

His plea signals that he could possibly serve as a witness in the Justice Department probe into Gaetz, who is being investigated in connection with possible sex trafficking of a minor.

While Matt Gaetz is under investigation, the Florida rep. has not been charged with a crime.

Federal prosecutors are examining whether Greenberg and Gaetz paid underage girls or offered them gifts in exchange for sex, according to reports.

Gaetz has not been charged with any crimes and has denied any wrongdoing.

The charges against Greenberg include sending anonymous letters to a school where a political rival worked and falsely accusing the man of sexual misconduct with a student, according to the indictment filed against him.

He was charged in August with sex trafficking a girl between ages 14 and 17 and using a state database to look up information about the minor and others with whom he was engaged in “sugar daddy” relationships, the indictment states.

Joel Greenberg’s plea could potentially be bad news for Matt Gaetz.

Greenberg is also accused of embezzling $400,000 from the Seminole County tax collector’s office.
