Doe!

An animal rescuer saved a deer that had a bucket stuck on its head as it swam in the Long Island Sound near Port Jefferson, dramatic video shows.

The footage shows Frank Floridia — president of the Strong Island Animal Rescue League — talking to a good Samaritan who picked him up in a boat after an attempt to reach the disoriented deer by swimming got too cold to withstand.

“Once I grab this handle,” Floridia said as the boat approached the animal, video shows. “A little bit more, a little bit more … almost.”

Floridia then dislodged the bucket during another pass at the doe, which proceeded to go beneath the boat momentarily before surfacing seconds later, the footage shows.

“She went under the boat,” Floridia told the man helping him. “It’s off! It’s off!”

The pair then guided the doe toward shore, where she dashed away once reaching dry land, the footage shows.

“All right honey, almost there!” Floridia said while on the way.

His unidentified assistant, meanwhile, joked about the odd water rescue.

“It’s called catch and release,” he said.

Despite the bucket on its head, Floridia said the deer seemed relatively undisturbed during the rescue. The animal eventually darted through the water as it got closer to shore, the heartwarming footage shows.

“She should be able to stand now,” he said. “Go ahead! Yeah! Beautiful.”

Floridia told WABC he first jumped into the sound after seeing the animal, but had to get out because it was too chilly.

“I bear-hugged her against the boat and he drove us back to shore,” Floridia recalled. “As we got back to shore, I was still holding her on the front of the boat. She seemed very calm – she knew she was being helped.”

The nonprofit group posted footage of the rescue to its Facebook page later Saturday, prompting dozens to say they were amazed by Floridia’s efforts.

“Incredible doesn’t even cut it!!!” one reply read. “This was an amazingly brave & heroic save!!”

Another read: “I laughed, I cried, I cheered you on. You’re an angel sent from above.”
