With the first COVID-19 vaccinations in the West finally given to an elderly man and woman in the United Kingdom, you can at last see a small break in the clouds that have covered 2020 in doom and gloom.

William Shakespeare, 81, got his shot early Tuesday, just after Margaret Keenan, 90, got hers. Let’s hope he’s right to say the “groundbreaking” vaccine will “make a difference to our lives from now on.”

Here in the States, the US Food and Drug Administration is poised to OK the Pfizer/ BioNTech vaccine — though we’d love to hear the US bureaucrats explain just why the Brits and the Canadians beat them to it. Why did it take FDA staff three weeks just to review the company’s submissions?

On the other hand, at least the Brits, by going first, have now raised the fact that those with “significant” allergies may have an adverse reaction to the vaccine.

And pity the people of Russia, who got bleak news about a prime national pastime and their vaccine: Officials there say you need to avoid drinking alcohol for two months after getting the shot. Count another blessing, Americans.
