RuYi Modern Chinese

RuYi was a pleasant surprise for my colleague and I... We really enjoyed the 60$ chef's choice menu and left full. The highlight was the pork belly bao and braised duck. The added bonus was the Hendricks gin at a reasonable price.

We had the 5 course vegetarian banquet. The food was pretty good, however the waiter failed to tell us that it did not include a dessert. We were all set for something sweet and a large mushroom dish came out instead. That was slightly disappointing. The night we went was not busy but the service was extremely slow. We had to wait to be seated, wait to be given food menus, wait for drinks, wait for the bill. By the end of the night it was frustrating! Definitely recommend the fried tofu and and boa. We had the eggplant chips as one of the course, it was good but should have been a side not the main deal.

Can't believe that on a Sun night, this place was empty. The food was simply amazing, service was that of a 5* place. I shared the banquet with 3 & it was exquisite!! I can't speak highly enough of this place.

Banquet incomplete When you attend a 5 course duck banquet, you expect 5 complete courses, each including duck. Apparently the dictionary definition of a course is a set of dishes served together, forming one of the successive parts of a meal. One of the courses in this banquet had 3 dishes - which RuYi decided constituted a course. Not in my book. And all of these were supposed to contain duck - one didn't. In addition, none of these "courses" stood out as great food. Textural contrasts and complexity of flavour missing. The final course of master-stock braised duck needed the uplift of some crunch from a few stir fried vegetables - obviously too much to ask.

What a surprise! We went for dinner to celebrate my mom's birthday with the family. The food is outstanding, definitely not what I was thinking when they said we were going to a Chinese restaurant. We started the night with cocktails. Then, we let the chef pick some plates for us on a daily set menu and we were pleased to know he could accommodate one of our guest's vegan diet. The tofu was delicious, even though I was a little skeptical about it at the beginning (I'm not a tofu person but I would have this one again). also, there was a pecking duck bun that was so fluffy and tasty. For the main course we were served some tender pork ribs, a beautiful and fragrant duck and a special mushroom dish just for our vegan guest. We had a wonderful night and definitely would recommend you to give it a try, totally worth it!
